F-150 RMT Overland vs RAM 1500 TRX

There are a heck of a lot of specialized performance trucks out there. There are Ford trucks, Chevy trucks, Ram trucks, and Toyota trucks, to name just a few manufacturers. Then, there is the huge number of companies that do custom aftermarket builds, alongside premium manufacturer trucks. This article is going to take a look at one truck from each of those two categories. The first is the Ford F-150 by RMT Overland, which is a performance vehicle company out in Colorado. The other vehicle is the RAM 1500 TRX, which is RAM's upscale version of the RAM 1500. Both of these vehicles are built for performance. Only one, however, provides adventure and has potential for daily use at the same time.

What's special about the RMT Overland package?

RMT Overland outfits their version of the Ford F-150 - which is the most popular truck in America - to be ready for "Turn-Key Adventure". The company swaps out the factory suspension for custom Fox 2.5 replacement coilover front shocks with an adjustable remote reservoir and Fox 2.5 replacement rear shocks with an adjustable piggyback reservoir. The suspension system is further supported by replacement BDS upper control arms. The RMT Overland is ready for "Turn-Key Adventure" as this custom suspension will allow it to conquer any terrain.

RMT doesn't stop there, though! In addition to custom wheels and 34" BFG tires, they add the following:

  • Baja Designs squadron cube lights and 20" light bar

  • RMT tube style rock rails

  • RMT speedometer calibration and gauge panel

  • and more!

Boone drivers who want to go on overnight trips in their Ford F-150 RMT Overland should check out the available features for the truck. There are two different available rack-mounted tents, RotoPax Gas and Water cans, and a RMT roof rack that lets you pack your own gear. When you take this beast into the wilds you'll have everything you need right at hand.

The RAM 1500 TRX

RAM created the TRX in-house and, as such, it has more modifications on the base truck than the RMT Overland version of the F-150 does. The key difference between the two is the engine found in the TRX: it sports the Hellcat, a supercharged 6.2L Hemi V8 that gets over 700 horsepower. This is, to be sure, a stunning engine. It can send the TRX roaring from 0 to 60 pretty quickly.

This comes at a cost, however. The Hellcat was originally found on a sedan-sized vehicle for a reason: it is not a fuel efficient engine. The truck is rated to get 10 miles to the gallon in the city and 14 on the highway, though reviewers found these ratings to be even lower in practice. The Ford F-150 RMT Overland's fuel economy will depend on the engine you have in the truck - and there are several to choose from - but it is liable to be almost twice that of the TRX.

Aside from these engine differences, the vehicles have some similarities. The RAM 1500 TRX has upgraded suspension and all-terrain tires like the RMT Overland version of the Ford F-150, and both have custom leather-outfitted interiors.

Turn-Key Adventure and Affordability

While neither of these trucks have low sticker prices, the RMT Overland won't break your bank every time you take it to the pump. The Hellcat engine is certainly fun, but the F-150 RMT Overland combines adventure-readiness with a more economical powertrain. This mix of adventure and daily-driver potential will make the Ford F-150 RMT Overland a more attractive choice for many Des Moines drivers.
